Sustainability Features: The Window Hood

Improving the energy efficiency and sustainability¹ of residential buildings is mandated in NSW, and today we discuss the simple addition of a sun hood, also known as a window hood, to reduce home cooling costs during the summer months.

The same concept can be applied to, and benefits received from, the use of window hoods for commercial premises.

What is a Window Hood?

A window hood is a fixed aluminium sheet fitted to two sides of a door or window, that acts as a type of awning for protection against the elements, such as sun, wind and rain.

Window hoods are commonly fabricated using Aluminium, as the material offers a light-weight, affordable and durable option that is corrosion resistant. The anti corrosion properties of aluminium are important when choosing a material that will be installed in coastal environments where salt water and air is more likely to cause corrosion to other metal substrates.

Benefits

In addition to improving energy efficiency within the home, window hoods offer the following advantages:

  • Light weight
  • Attractive architectural feature
  • Provide shade
  • Cost-effective
  • Easy to install during the building process, or as an addition to an existing building
  • Protection from the elements
  • Privacy

Where can a window hood be utilised?

Window hoods, as the name suggests, are installed surrounding windows to protect from sun, wind and rain. However, they’re also commonly installed surrounding doors to provide additional protection from wind and rain as visitors enter or leave a property.

Window hoods can be installed across just about any type of window or door, as they’re non-load bearing and can easily be added to an existing structure.

We commonly manufacture window hoods for:

  • High rise apartments
  • Commercial facilities such as warehouses
  • Residential homes and townhouses

Finishes

powder coated sun hoodAluminium window hood finishes include powder coating to match any existing colobond® or painted features at the property.

Powder coating creates a finish that is harder and more durable than traditional paint, meaning your window hood will hold up against the harsh Australian elements for years to come.

There are two size options for the window hood finish:
