Vaucluse Residence: Custom Aluminium Planter Boxes Built to Last

Custom aluminium planter boxes at Vaucluse home.

When a builder or architect specifies a planter box, they’re not just thinking about greenery. They’re thinking about weight loads, waterproofing interfaces, drainage, longevity in coastal conditions, and how the finished product will look against stone, timber, and glass. Off-the-shelf options rarely answer all of those questions. Custom aluminium does.

At Alumac, we fabricate custom aluminium planter boxes for residential and commercial projects across Sydney and New South Wales. Every box is made to spec, powder coated to match the project palette, and built to last in environments where lesser materials give up quickly.

Why Aluminium for Planter Boxes?

Aluminium is genuinely well suited to the job. It’s lightweight relative to steel, which matters when planters sit on rooftop terraces, elevated decks, or suspended slabs. It won’t rust. It holds a powder coat finish exceptionally well, giving architects and designers a full colour range to work with. And it can be fabricated to virtually any dimension, including tall narrow profiles for screening, wide low-profile beds, or raised garden beds integrated into retaining structures.

For coastal and near-coastal projects, aluminium is the right call. Salt air degrades steel, discolours timber, and causes concrete to spall over time. A well-fabricated aluminium planter, powder coated with a suitable exterior finish, will hold its appearance and structural integrity for decades.

What Builders and Architects Should Know When Specifying

A few things worth considering at the specification stage:

  • The base detail needs to accommodate drainage. Whether that’s a drainage cell layer, perforated base, or a direct connection to a linear drain, the base design of the box needs to be resolved before fabrication.
  • Wall thickness and internal dimensions affect soil volume and plant selection. For feature trees or large shrubs, deeper boxes with reinforced corners are worth specifying upfront.
  • Powder coat selection should account for sun exposure. North-facing or western-facing planters in full sun will retain more heat in darker colours, which affects soil moisture. This is worth a conversation at the design stage.
  • Fixing and anchoring needs to be considered, particularly for elevated or exposed positions. Alumac can fabricate with integrated fixing points or base plates to suit the structural substrate.

Made to Spec, Delivered to Site

Alumac fabricates from its facility in Taren Point, Sydney. For commercial or multi-residential work with a larger volume of planters, early engagement means we can schedule fabrication to suit your programme.
